Our Team

Since co-founding Capital Investment Companies in 1984, Richard continues to serve as an Executive Officer and principal for the firm. Richard received his BA of Business administration from North Carolina State University and has worked in the financial services industry since 1982. Richard is married with two children and enjoys traveling, sports, music, and cars.

Since co-founding Capital Investment Companies in 1984, Bobby served as an Executive Officer and principal for the firm through 2012. Bobby continues to work as the firm’s Chief Investment Officer. Bobby graduated from Wake Forest with a B.A. in Business and Finance and has worked in the financial services industry since 1979. While not in the office, Bobby enjoys reading, and playing tennis and golf.

Ben serves as the President of Capital Investment Companies. Ben received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated from Fuqua School of Business at Duke University with a Master of Business Administration. He has been in the financial services industry since 1986. Ben is married with five children and while not in the office, he enjoys spending time with his family.

Bill serves as the Director of Capital Insurance Affiliates. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BS in Business Administration and has worked in the financial services industry since 1988. Bill is a chartered Financial Consultant, specializing in business and estate planning. He is also a member of the National Association of Philanthropic Planners. Married with three children, he enjoys golf, skiing & tennis.

Con McDonald is a vice president, investment advisor, and broker with the Capital Investment Companies. He is also president of Physicians Financial Services where he advises physicians on various financial issues. Con has been with the firm since 1984 and in the financial services industry since 1983. He graduated from UNC-CH with a major in accounting. Con is married with two children and enjoys sailing, boating and snow skiing.

Hal serves as Vice President and Portfolio Manager for Capital Investment Counsel. Hal received his B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Hal has been and continues to be an integral component in building North Carolina’s premiere investment firms with an enviable client list that includes RIAs, bank/trust departments, and broker-dealers. In his free time, he enjoys working out, reading, and hot yoga.

Kurt serves as Vice President and Portfolio Manager for Capital Investment Counsel. Kurt graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a BS in Business Finance and has been working in the financial services industry since 1992. Married with three children, Kurt and enjoys hunting, fishing, and motorcycling in his spare time.

Ron serves as Chief Compliance Officer for Capital Investment Companies. Ron graduated from the Southeastern Trust School of Campbell University and has worked in the financial services industry since 1994. Married with one child, Ron enjoys fly fishing, classic cars, and photography.

Aaron Hall joined Capital in February 2023 as a Trading Operations Associate. He obtained his AA from Bladen Community College, his Accounting Core Certification from Wake Tech, and served 6 years in the U.S. Army. In his free time, Aaron enjoys music, sports, and spending time with his friends and family.

Alan Long is an associate with Capital Insurance Affiliates. He has been with the firm since 2000 and in the financial services industry since 1974. Alan is a Chartered Life Underwriter and specializes in Insurance and Estate Planning. He is also past President of the Raleigh-Durham CLU Chapter. Alan attended Elon College and Wake Forest University. He is married with four daughters and five grandchildren and enjoys golf and traveling.

Allison Smith is an Administrative Assistant for Capital Insurance Affiliates. She has been with the firm since 2003 and in the Retirement Plan Administration industry since 1991. Allison attended Harbarger College and Wake Technical Community College.

Andrew joined Capital Investment Companies in 2024 as a Compliance and Operations Associate. He earned a B.S. in Business Management from Appalachian State University and holds the Series 6, 7, 63, 65, and 24 licenses. Outside of work, Andrew enjoys playing golf, cheering on Liverpool FC (Go Reds!), and taking advantage of any opportunity to go hiking.

Annie Beckstrand joined Capital in February 2023. Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Annie moved to Raleigh to settle an itch for adventure. Her main loves in life are art, books, coffee and dogs. She is currently studying Art History at UNC Greensboro and her favorite artists include Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Michelangelo. When not working or studying you can usually find Annie at a used bookstore or out enjoying the sun on her paddleboard.

April VanNieuwland joined Capital Investment Companies in 2022 as an Operations and Marketing Specialist after graduating from NC State with a B.S. in business administration. She holds her Series 7, 66, and 24 licenses, and in her free time enjoys spending time with family and friends and trying new restaurants.

Bill Rogers joined Capital in 2022. He has been in the wealth management industry since 1980. Prior to joining Capital, Bill worked as a Financial Advisor with Smith Barney before moving to Wheat First Securities in 1987, where he served as Managing Director and Regional President of the Mid-Atlantic Region. Through all of the iterations of Wheat First to Wells Fargo Advisors, Bill maintained his role as Regional President of the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions until 2021. Bill graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979. He and his wife, Laura, have three daughters Laura, Kate, and Alston.

Brenda Bruggeman is an accountant for Capital Investment Companies and has been with the firm since 2012. She graduated from ECU with a BSBA degree in accounting. Brenda enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, traveling and the beach.

Burke Freedland is a Trading Assistant for the Capital Investment Companies Brokerage Division and has been with the firm since 2012. He graduated from East Carolina University with a BSBA in Finance. Burke enjoys fishing, watching sports and spending time with family and friends.

Cindy serves as an Administrative and Sales Assistant for Capital Investment Group. Cindy attended Oklahoma State University and Southwestern Oklahoma State College and has worked in the financial services industry since 1998. While not at work, she enjoys gardening and reading.

David Puckett is a Case Management Specialist. His duties include preparing proposals, contracting, payroll, underwriting support and anything else needed to get cases issued. He has been in the financial services industry since 2012. He and his wife have been married since 2015 and enjoy the outdoors, cooking and going to the lake. They have two rescue dogs that they love to spoil. David graduated from North Carolina State University with a BS in Textile Technology and is a rabid Wolfpack fan. Go Pack!

Dawn Earley is an administrative assistant for Con McDonald and has been with Physicians Financial Services since 2008. She was a real estate paralegal for 9 years and a title insurance marketing rep. for 5 years prior to joining the financial services industry. Dawn attended NC State and Durham Technical Community College. She enjoys traveling, running, great wine and her two Boston Terriers in her free time.

Duncan serves as a Financial Advisor and assists Capital Investment Counsel with Operations and Marketing. After graduating from NC State with a B.A. in History, he has obtained his SIE, Series 7, and Series 66 licenses. In his free time, Duncan enjoys fishing, playing golf, and spending time with family and friends.

George serves as an Investment Advisor and Broker, specializing in portfolio management, asset allocation, and mutual funds. George attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has worked in the financial services industry since 1986. Married with two children, George enjoys tennis, fly fishing, and attending his son’s athletic events.

Hill Brooks started as an intern at Capital Investment Companies in March 2024 and was hired full-time in August 2024 as a Trading Operations Associate, specializing in new account openings. He is attending Wake Tech as part of the C-STEP program, working towards transferring to UNC–Chapel Hill to pursue a degree in Data Analytics with a minor in Business Administration. In his free time, Hill enjoys playing chess with friends and family, studying fascinating topics, and listening to music.

Jacqueline Nutter is an Administrative Assistant for Capital Investment Companies and has been with the firm since March 2004. Jackie is a native of Wake County an outdoor enthusiast. Jackie is an event organizer for the I’ve Always Wanted to Try That Group and a member of the Triangle Hiking and Outdoors Group. She has held numerous volunteer positions within our local schools and has been active in Wake county civic and community affairs. In her spare time she enjoys exercise, reading, running and prospecting real estate deals.

Julie serves as the Office Manager at Capital Investment Companies. Julie is married with two children and enjoys going to the beach.

Kemp serves as a Brokerage Operations Associate. He graduated from Appalachian State University in 2010. While not working, Kemp enjoys golf, tennis, travel, watching sports, and gardening.

Kristin Spears is the Billing and Receivables Coordinator for Capital Investment Counsel and has been with the company since March 2006. She graduated from East Carolina University with a BS in Apparel Merchandising and a minor in Business. She is married and enjoys ECU football, the beach, and spending time with her family.

Kristy serves as an accounts payable clerk, working in the accounting and commissions department. She obtained her AA degree from Vance-Granville Community College in 2017 and her BS in Accounting from Liberty University in 2020. While not at work, Kristy enjoys spending time with family and friends, being outdoors, hiking, reading, and taking care of furry friends.

Lisa DeVine is a Compliance Officer with Capital Investment Companies. She re-joined Capital, after an initial ten-year stint, and working in a consultative capacity for an additional eight years, in 2018. Lisa is married, has three dogs and enjoys all things outdoors.

Mark Jessick joined Capital in 2020, and works with Capital Insurance Affiliates, as well as other entities within our company. He has been in the financial industry since 2013, and graduated from UNC-Wilmington with a BS in Geology. Mark enjoys golf, photography, aviation and all racket sports.

Matt Keen works with Capital Insurance Affiliates. He joined the firm in 2016 and has been in the financial services industry since 2012. Matt graduated from Campbell University with a degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Trust and Wealth Management. He maintains his General Securities License and General Securities Principal License. Matt enjoys the outdoors and taking care of his cows and Longleaf pines.

Missy Schwab is a compliance assistant with Capital Investment Companies and has been with the firm since 2007. She attended Peace College and Meredith College. Missy is married with two children and enjoys reading, the beach and spending time with family and friends.

R.E. Rose is an investment advisor and broker with Capital Investment Companies. He joined the firm in 2016 and has been in the financial services industry since 1986. R.E. graduated from North Carolina State University with a BS in Mathematics. He is married with two children and enjoys golf and saltwater fishing.

Richard serves as an investment advisor and broker, specializing in portfolio management and mutual funds with Capital Investment Companies. Richard graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BS in Business Administration. Richard is married with three children, and while not at work, he enjoys playing basketball and golf.

Robin serves as Director of Compliance and Operations for Albridge. Robin graduated from John Carroll University with a Bachelor of Arts and has currently holds her Series 7, 24, 55, 63 licenses. An Ohio native, Robin now enjoys traveling with her two daughters as well as spending time with family and friends.

Sam works as a Trading and Operations Associate. Since graduating from Bluefield University, Sam has acquired over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry and holds his series 6, 7, 63, and 66 licenses. He has been married to his wife Jenny for 27 years and together they have one child, Ginger, and two Border Collies, Comet and Shadow. Outside the office, Sam enjoys grilling, tailgating, NC State athletics, and is an active member of the Wolfpack Club.

Stephanie serves as an Administrative Assistant. She graduated from NC State with a BA in Business Management and has been with Physicians Financial Services since 1996. While not in the office, Stephanie enjoys playing tennis.

Steven Wilson is the General Counsel for Capital Investment Companies. He has been with the firm since 2003 and has been a financial analyst, as well as provided legal, financial, and strategic planning counsel to both individual and business clients since 1997. Steven graduated from Duke University with a B.A. degree and received his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law. He is also a CFA Charterholder. Steven enjoys tennis, backpacking, reading and traveling.

Sue Ellen Harrington is the operations manager for Capital Investment Counsel as well as corporate division of Capital Investment Companies. She as been with the firm since 1991 and maintains her general securities license. Sue Ellen graduated from NC State with a BA in Accounting. In her spare time she enjoys snow skiing.

TJ serves as Bobby Edgerton’s Executive Assistant. Bobby has been both a mentor and friend to TJ, emboldening their 20+ year partnership. TJ graduated from the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 2001 with a background in Business Management with a minor in Communications. He has been married to his wife Michelle since 2009 and together have two wonderful children, Graham and Noelle. While not at work, he enjoys trips to Ocean Isle Beach and spending time with friends and family.

Tess serves as Compliance and Operations Manager for Capital Investment Advisory Services, LLC, managing general Investment Advisory and compliance-related issues. Having worked in the financial services industry since 1987, Tess maintains her General Securities License and General Securities Principal License.

Tim Schutz is the IT Guru for Capital Investment Companies. Tim is an alumni of Western Carolina University, and holds several Microsoft and other network certifications. Tim enjoys working on cars and computers, and taking care of our Capital “family.” He is married to Kathy, and they have two sons; Tim II and Matthew.

Vee Vee serves as the Cash Management and Asset Movement Specialist for Capital Investment Companies Brokerage Divisions. She graduated from Peace College with a BS in Communications and Mass Media. Vee Vee is married with two children and enjoys traveling and spending time at the beach with family.
